In recent years, there has been a wide range of sources for access to information-- the most prominent of them is social media. With that, the spread of information has been easier and faster than ever before. Unfortunately, this also means an increased risk of misinformation can be spread and can impact our personal lifestyle and wellbeing.
We’re put together a list of common myths about teeth brushing and these myths have been corrected by our trusted doctors.
1- “There is no need to brush baby teeth.”
Although children lose their baby teeth as they grow, they must still be brushed. Establishing good habits at an early age helps to ensure lifelong dental health. Dentists advise that even with infants it’s necessary to clean the mouth of the infant before the appearance of his first teeth, by using a cotton swab or a piece of clean gauze moistened with water to gently massage the baby’s teeth and gums to remove the remnants of milk deposited on to the gums. This is especially important since the mother's milk contains sugar that may stick to the baby's teeth, feeding the bacteria that stimulates tooth decay. Our dentists recommend that parents clean the baby’s mouth after the infant’s last feeding before they sleep. They also recommend that children brush their teeth twice daily to get into the habit from a young age.
2- “Removing calcareous deposits can cause damage to the outer layer of the tooth.”
Removing plaque routinely is a necessary treatment to maintain the health of your teeth and gums and does not cause harm at all. In fact, the process of cleaning teeth from tartar is a popular cosmetic practice but is also necessary to maintain a healthy hygiene. It can be a preventative to many dental diseases or mouth problems. This technique is done through
the intervention of the doctor by using some tools to remove tartar and plaque accumulated around the gum line and the teeth, as well as other areas where there could be lot of accumulation of this type of sediment.
3- “Using dental floss causes spaces between the teeth.”
Dental flossing is paramount for dental health. It prevents the occurrence of cavities between the teeth by getting to the hard to reach areas and improving overall health.
Visiting the dentist regularly helps in maintaining the health of the teeth and mouth, and also helps in maintaining the health of the rest of the body.
