What is cosmetic teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a cosmetic treatment to lighten your teeth and helps in eliminating stains that appear on the teeth. It is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for teeth because it improves the appearance of your teeth and your smile.

There are a couple of ways to achieve this treatment; Laser Whitening, Home Whitening Kit.

- Laser whitening in the dental clinic:

Laser teeth whitening is the fastest way to whiten teeth! It is performed in one session and does not require anesthesia. To protect the mouth and gums and avoid the effect of bleaching materials, a semi-gel material is applied on the gums. The teeth are then coated with a chemical solution that includes hydrogen peroxide. Finally a laser is used to activate this element. While this process if highly effective, the downside is that there is an increased risk of tooth sensitivity. If you already have sensitive teeth, the procedure will likely be uncomfortable and possibly not recommended.

- Home Teeth Whitening

In the case of home teeth whitening, the dentist takes the size of the patient’s teeth and jaw and prepares one or two molds for the patient as per the patient’s request. In other word, it depends on whether you’d like to whiten one jaw or both jaws.It is paramount that the mold fits precisely in the patient's mouth. A good fit helps keep the bleaching material on the teeth so that it does not irritate the gums. Over-the-counter molds usually don't fit the structure of the mouth. At home, the molds are filled with bleach obtained from a doctor, and then the mold is placed in the mouth for several hours each day. Many people reach their desired level of whitening within two to four weeks.

Studies show that home bleaching can take approximately 3 to 6 months to achieve results compared to professional bleaching at a dental clinic.  As for the sensitivity of the teeth, it was recorded that the procedure conducted at the clinic results in increased sensitivity more so than when performed at home. This is due to the increased intensity of teeth whitening at the clinic, which also achieves faster results.  In terms of efficacy, both at home teeth whitening and clinical teeth whitening achieve the same results. The whitening in the clinic has a higher sensitivity level but can be achieved in a significantly faster period. Home whitening can take months to achieve but has a decreased side effect of teeth sensitivity. To maintain white teeth both procedures require periodic visits to your dentist. The dentist will either offer new molds if you wish to continue your home treatment, or perform the procedure at the clinic.
